Motomanhattan and MOTOMANHATTAN:The Art of Falling
Manhattan from the back of a motorcycle. Living in Manhattan, I feel dwarfed by the buildings, the distant sky and the challenge to see vertically as I move through town. During 1998 I was riding my bicycle daily through Midtown. I wanted to capture the exhilaration of flying through the streets. I also knew that I could not get the feeling of the architecture, of glimpsing the enormity of the city, from mounting a camera on my bike. From the back of the motorcycle, driven by my neighbor Tom Lewis, I was able to get the sense of motion and architecture, time and space. In 2004, Motomanhattan was reworked with choreography by dancer Catherine Hourihan. In 2007 the dance performance video installation became The Art of Falling.
